What is an anal abscess?

An anal abscess is an infected cavity around the anus that is filled with pus. The depth of the infection dictates its diagnosis by the proctologist, as there are two main types:

Perianal abscess, a shallow collection of pus around the anal tissue
Perirectal abscess, affecting the deeper tissue surrounding the anus

What causes an anal abscess?

Anal abscesses often arise because of an acute infection of the gland located inside the anus. Such infections can occur when bacteria, fecal, and foreign matters enter through the gland, causing it to clog up and accumulate bacteria.

What are the symptoms of an anal abscess?

Some common symptoms associated with anal abscess include persistent anal pain and redness around the anus, as well as fever, external drainage of pus, and a general sense of illness.

How is an anal abscess treated?
