An anal fissure is a split or tear in the lining of the anal canal that is associated with anal / rectal pain and sometimes presents with anal bleeding. Anal fissures are quite common in the general population, but are often confused with other causes of pain and bleeding, such as hemorrhoids.
What is an anal fissure?
An anal fissure is a small split or tear in the anal opening or within the lining of the anus. Anal fissures are extremely painful and debilitating, although they are quite common. They are rarely dangerous, and are often confused with hemorrhoids. Anal fissures may also be confused with HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus), an STD, HPV (human papilloma virus) and anal cancer or anal dysplasia. Therefore, it is very important to be evaluated by a specialist such as a proctologist, when they arise.
What are the symptoms of an anal fissure?
- Sharp, stinging pain associated with a bowel movement and lasting up to 2-3 hours after a bowel movement
- Lingering pain which remains long after passing a bowel movement
- Bright red blood from the anus
What causes an anal fissure?
Anal fissures are typically caused by stress or trauma to the inner lining of the anus, which can happen due to causes such as:
- Constipation
- Passing a large, hard stool
- Continuous diarrhea
- Trauma from childbirth
- Crohn’s disease
- HSV
- Tuberculosis
How is an anal fissure treated by a proctologist?
Anal fissures will usually heal on their own, but you can address the pain and prevent recurrence in several ways including:
- Staying hydrated
- Adding fiber to the diet
- Medications such as stool softeners and painkillers
- BOTOX®
- In certain cases, the proctologist may need to perform surgery
